Devices and Setup

Clicker systems use three main components: clickers, TurningPoint software (and a PC or Mac with PowerPoint to run it on), and an RF antenna. These components, and how to obtain them, are explained below.

Borrow or Adopt Clickers?
For trial purposes or occasional use, instructors can borrow clicker loaner kits from OIT Equipment Loan. See Borrow Clickers for details.

Instructors who chooses to use clickers in the classroom on a regular basis should see Adopt Clickers for details.

Clickers (ResponseCard RF Keypads)A clicker device.

Each student needs a clicker device, also known as ResponseCard RF keypad, in order to respond to questions.

  • Students can purchase their own clickers. See Clicker for Students for details.

  • Alternatively, students with wireless laptops or PDAs can install software for "virtual clickers" called vPad instead of purchasing separate devices. (TurningPoint vPad software is cheaper for the student to purchase than a clicker device.) See the vPad Information section of the Clicker for Students page for details.

TurningPoint Software

The instructor needs a laptop (or a classroom computer) with Microsoft PowerPoint and software called TurningPoint 2006 in order to display questions and results. TurningPoint is a simple toolbar add-in to PowerPoint that allows instructors to create questions and collect results.

  • OSU instructors can download TurningPoint 2006 at no cost. TurningPoint workshops and instructions also available. See TurningPoint Software for details.

RF antennaRF Antenna

The classroom must be equipped with an RF ("radio frequency") antenna that can receive the responses sent from each clicker and transmit them to the instructor's computer. Antennas can be placed by OIT in a classroom pool room permanently or loaned to an instructor to move about.

  • Instructors who wish to use clickers should read the Adopt Clickers page for details on requesting classroom setup, including antenna installation.
