When Second Life launches for the first time, you will land on Orientation Island (unless you chose another community when registering), an island where new users can learn the basics of Second Life.
To remove the blue display from Orientation Island (called a “HUD” or Heads Up Display), use your right mouse button to click on it and then choose detach.
Although the initial lessons on Orientation Island are helpful, we recommend spending time at the new user orientation space created by the New Media Consortium (NMC), which is less busy and provides a smoother user experience.
In order to access NMC Orientation, you first must complete some basic tutorials on Second Life's Orientation Island. After completing the initial tutorials, you will be able to teleport.

To teleport to NMC Orientation:
Click "Map" in the lower right corner of the program window, type "NMC Orientation," press "Search," and click "Teleport."
Then, follow the orange arrows to explore basic Second Life functions. Note, it may take a few moments to “rez” (bring to resolution) the orange arrows.

See Navigating for basic instructions on moving around in Second Life.
